If you want to understand how bees think then you need to watch this lecture.
In the mammalian mind an individual neuron is not intelligent. But a collection of many neurons makes a conscious brain. The bee is the same. The individual bee is an automaton and behaves instinctively but a hive of bees is intelligent and capable of conscious decisions.
Each hive has its own personality based on the various weights of expressed genes which is a genetic component but also a nurture component based on the experiences of the bees. That is what blew my mind. It is the experienced bees that guide the hive in its decision making. Wow.
